Course details

On this course you will usually be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit. This will include senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators, technicians and research students. You will also benefit from regular guest lectures from industry.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed by coursework culminating in your final year research project, and you will also undertake group work and written exams. As an indication, 59% of the most popular units on this course in 2016/17 were assessed by coursework.

As the use of virtual environments, computer databases and information technology has steadily grown, so too has the threat of cyber-attacks. Government agencies, police forces and defence organisations have all identified a major skills shortage of cyber security practitioners globally; as such this cutting-edge degree addresses this gap in the market and has been developed to meet the requirements of the National Cyber Security Strategy.

As well as giving you a sound technical education, this course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the computer security sector. You’ll be taught by experts in their field, each bringing their unique skills and knowledge to this exciting programme of study. You’ll also have access to our state-of-the-art Cyber Security Unit.

In addition, according to a recent report by the Economist, BU is ranked third for boosting graduate salaries in Computer Science. In 2014, our graduates earned an average of £33,500 – £7,224 more than the expected earnings.

We understand that computing is a diverse subject and that it can be difficult to know what area you’d like to specialise in at this stage in your career. That’s why all of our courses within the computing framework share a common first year, giving you the time to really explore the subject before deciding on a specialism. There are courses that allow you to keep a relatively wide focus, as well as degrees that provide a greater level of specialism, giving you plenty of flexibility when it comes to which direction you want your career to take.
