About the course

Course content

Main research activities are represented by 4 groups with excellent facilities and supportive environment for research. The department is designated a 'Centre of Excellence' by the Welsh Development Agency. 'MONET' (European Network of Excellence in Model-Based Systems and Qualitative Reasoning) is co-ordinated by the Advanced Reasoning Group.

We are a leading computing department in Wales and one of the major UK departments, both for research and for teaching. We intend to build on our past achievements, to become one of the leading departments at international level.

We are committed to offering courses that prepare you for your professional career; we believe that such courses must combine a sound education in theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline with the development of lasting personal skills, so that you will have the adaptability to thrive in a world of constantly changing technology.

Research in the department is motivated by the needs of industry, business and government; we actively look for opportunities for technology transfer. An important aspect of this is that our research work must be reflected in our teaching. We believe that collaboration in research is essential and we collaborate with industry, with government, and with other academic institutions, on a national and international level. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment, it was found that 100% of the research impact was assessed as world-leading!

Overview

Members of staff are always happy to discuss possible MPhil and PhD research programmes with suitably qualified graduates. Research should normally be related to one of the main areas of research of the department. There are about 20 students pursuing postgraduate research programmes in the Department at present, working alongside lecturers and research associates in a lively and well-integrated research community. Grants from Research Councils and other sources may be available through the Department.

Our Staff

Almost all of the Department of Computer Science Lecturers and Teaching Fellows are qualified to PhD level, and those who are not have considerable research or industrial experience. All new Lecturers and Teaching Fellows are required to obtain the PGCTHE, and hence are Senior Fellows or Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. The department also employs a number of part time demonstrators and tutors and some student demonstrators, who are selected from our undergraduate and postgraduate students. Research fellows and research assistants (mostly PhD qualified) may also be involved in delivering occasional teaching when it is appropriate.
